Green electricity in the UK will flourish ‘when subsidies are removed’

John Constable, director of policy and research at the Renewable Energy Foundation, has predicted that the green electricity market in the UK will greatly improve once subsidies are withdrawn.

While Dr Constable supports the benefits of subsidies for renewable energy generation, which he says is allowing the UK to experiment with new technologies, he also noted that the industry is relying on funding and subsidies to transform the UK’s electricity system. Something which he believes is not “economically sustainable”.

Dr Constable also said that schemes such as the Feed-In Tariff are good for householders in encouraging them to install renewable technology in their home.

The Renewable Energy Foundation (REF) is a registered charity promoting sustainable development for the benefit of the public by means of energy conservation and the use of renewable energy.

The REF was founded in 2004.
